Rothbury Climate & Nature
Together We CAN Make a Difference

Rothbury CAN is a community group dedicated to addressing climate change and environmental sustainability
We do this by having different action groups; there is something for everyone and we believe that every individual can contribute to making a positive impact

Rothbury Rubbish Friends
Community Litter Picking Group, meeting monthly.
With thanks to Northumberland County Council, and Rothbury Parish Council, we have all the equipment needed: pickers, bags, hoops, hi-viz vests, gloves. There are a lot of us - many just keep their own areas tidy. Each month, RRF organises Community Litter Pick on Saturdays.
We meet in the Haugh Car Park at 10.00 am - all equipment is
supplied. If you would like to be a Rothbury Rubbish Friend,
or you would like to report somewhere which needs to be
litter-picked, please contact us

Rothbury Tree Wardens
Community tree management group who plant, protect and promote local trees.
Northumberland County Council, alongside Rothbury CAN, formed the first Tree Warden Group in Northumberland.
Tree Wardens plant, protect, and promote their local trees. No training or experience in tree management is needed – just a love of trees and a few hours to spare.
Rothbury Tree Wardens are a friendly bunch of people who give some spare time to help with:
-
local tree planting days
-
pruning, watering, and giving vital aftercare to local trees after planting
-
keep an eye on our iconic trees, and inform Rothbury Parish Council of any needing attention.
-

Coquetdale Repair Café
Community repair/ reuse/ recycle group who hold pop up events every six to eight weeks in the Jubilee Hall Rothbury.
We aim to keep as much as possible out of landfill or incineration by repairing broken and damaged items - and teaching people how to repair things themselves. Visitors enjoy a cup of tea or coffee and homemade cake and can watch items like, clothes, knitwear, toys, garden tools, small electricalsand small pieces of furniture being mended by our team of volunteers.

ROWANS recovering our wild and natural spaces
Through planting native wild flower seeds, wild life friendly shrubs and trees we hope to increase biodiversity and improve existing wildlife corridors.
We are looking after the various projects established over the last three years. - Trees and hedging in the grounds of Rothbury Community Hospital, the cemetery, and the edge of the field below overlooking the golf course.
Wild meadow whichcan be seen to the left of the main hospital entrance. A meadow has been seeded below the cemetery overlooking the golf course.
We have adopted the willow tunnel and tipi beside the river west of Beggars Rigg.

We display photographs of our work at The Great Big Green Day in Rothbury every year and hold our Apple Day in October.
This work needs lots of volunteers and we are always looking for offers of help which can be as little as an hour now and then or longer if you have the time.
Please look at our Instagram page instagram.com/rowansfor some great photos of our work.

CRAG Coquetdale River Action Group
Testing the water quality in the River Coquet - a new, collaborative project, with the Northumberland Rivers Trust, bringing together environmental groups, parish councils, WIs, etc, along the length of the Coquet and any residents who are interested in maintaining and improving the health of the river and the quality of the water. Rothbury CAN has a group that is part of this project.
Jane Davis from Rothbury WI has been a member of the team setting up the project. Jane writes:

"Water quality in the UK has been very much at the forefront of the news in 2023 and this, together with a National WI campaign for 2023 on 'Clean Rivers for people and animals' encouraged Rothbury WI members to start a Citizen Science testing project, supported by the Northumberland Rivers Trust (NRT) to monitor the quality of the River Coquet water.
Our volunteer group of members has been testing weekly since October 2023, mainly, but not exclusively, downriver from the Rothbury Combined Sewage Outflow pipe. The testing uses a Palintest sewage effluent test kit to record the measurements of river health - the permanganate value (particulates - effluent content!) the pH, the turbidity (how clear the water is), and the water temperature. We have also just acquired tests to measure the electrical conductivity, phosphate & nitrate concentration levels of the water. In the Spring and Summer months, we will be dipping our boots in the river to start some kick-testing to look at the invertebrates and River Fly distribution. The data picture we are hoping to build up over time and share publicly with all interested parties will provide a good indicator of the river’s health and any issues."
